      EVENT DETAILS
FJI's Book Club with Upton Sinclair's 'The Jungle'

Dear friends, For our next book club we'll look at Upton Sinclair's 'The Jungle'. Sinclair wrote the novel in 1906 to portray the harsh conditions and exploited lives of Lithuanian immigrants in the United States with a focus on the meat industry. Sinclair thought of himself as a novelist, not as a muckraker who investigated and wrote about economic and social injustices. But The Jungle took on a life of its own as one of the great muckraking works of the Progressive Era. At the book club we will take a closer look at the economic injustices of the time and discuss how relevant his writing is today. Have a look at this review to find out more: https://www.theguardian.com/books/2006/aug/05/featuresreviews.guardianreview24 'The Jungle' is available in local libraries, as well as book shops. In case you can't get hold of one, please let us know!
