During the three days of this workshop, you will carve green Irish Ash logs, weave a seat out of hemp and will come home with your own piece of handcrafted furniture. This workshop builds numerous furniture making skills such as -cleaving wood from logs -shaping wood with drawknives and spokeshaves -mortise and tenon joinery -oil and wax finishes -seat weaving with hemp cord What is green wood? The term "green" in woodworking refers to the amount of water that is contained inside the wood therefore freshly cut timber is said to be green. However, this term has a dual meaning in green woodworking due firstly to the massive ecological benefits associated with the use of coppiced native woodland but also the human-powered, hand tool, off-grid nature of the craft. Why hand tools? Working wood by hand provides one the opportunity to gain an understanding of how wood can be worked, otherwise disguised by the use of machinery. Working with wood using hand tools provides a noise-free environment and an almost meditative experience. 3 DAY COURSE: Saturday, June 1st 10am - 5pm Sunday June 2nd 10am-5pm Monday, June 3rd 10am-5pm. Suitable for beginners. Cost €250 View a video of Fergus making a stool and photos from our his Green Wood Stool making Workshop at Bí URBAN in May
